Car Technology You Should Know About: Lane Keeping

Luxury sports car speeding on a highway at the sunset

There are two kinds of drifting in the auto world. First, there’s the entertaining kind of drifting — as featured in the Fast & Furious movies — and then, there’s the scary kind that finds you moving into the next lane, possibly into traffic, without even realizing what’s happening.

Technology to the rescue, as most auto makers now offer lane-departure-warning systems that will alert you when your car begins to leave its lane. The car uses a series of cameras to track lane markings. When you begin to drift across them – without using your turn signal to indicate you want to do this – a warning might pop up in your instrument cluster or flash on your rearview mirror, accompanied by a chime or tone.

Like most of the new high-tech safety systems, lane-departure systems are “passive” – you don’t have to do anything to activate them. There are caveats though – the systems can fail when lane markings are either unclear or obstructed (like when snow covered – which is often the case in Minnesota in the winter).

The more sophisticated systems add a feature that will automatically turn the steering wheel to bring you back into the lane if you don’t do it yourself. And turning the wheel will override the system.
