Common Signs You Need New Brakes
Avoid the extra headache of having your vehicle towed by maintaining your brakes and knowing common brake problems. Your vehicle is a complex system and your brakes should be a high priority to protect your safety. Here at TGK Automotive we have ASE certified mechanics that do complete brake repair in Saint Paul and Hugo. Here are some quick tips to help you recognize if your brakes need to be changed.
Brake pads take most of the beating when it comes to the braking system. They should be checked at least every six months or when you suspect there is a problem. Most vehicle’s brake pads have a thin metal tab that vibrates against the rotor to warn you that they have worn down to a dangerous level. Squeaking, grinding, or an increased stopping distance are signs that your brakes need to be looked at. When brakes are ignored, the pads can wear down to a dangerous level and ruin the rotors. Ignoring the problem can cause a lot more problems and you will end up with a higher repair bill.
Rotors can warp from overheating or incorrect tightening of the wheel. A warning sign that a rotor is warped is if you feel a pulsing feeling when applying the brakes. The pulsing is not only annoying but can be very dangerous.
How to save your brakes:
1. Don’t “ride” the brakes! Slow down at a moderate pace and then release the brake to cool, instead of riding the brakes and overheating them.
2. Try to downshift, if possible, to place some of the braking on the engine instead of the brakes. This does not harm your engine, but only do this when weather conditions are good. Ice, snow, or rain can cause your car to skid if downshifting.
3. Keep your brakes and wheels clean by using a good wheel cleaner. Clean brakes have better performance and will keep temperatures down.
Over time your brake pads will wear down and need replacing. Be aware of the warning signs that your brakes may need replacing, as the braking system is the most important component of your safety. Call today to schedule an appointment to have your brakes checked or to have them replaced before it causes more damage to your vehicle.
