How to Keep Your Transmission Healthy
Keeping your automatic transmission properly maintained is very important and should save you from having to replace it. Having to replace a transmission is one of the most costly components to repair. Here are some tips that can keep your transmission running smoothly!
At TGK Automotive we recommend to get a transmission flush every 30,000 miles, but no longer then every 50,000 miles. The reason we recommend to change it every 30,000 miles is to play it safe and because the cost of flush is a lot less expensive than a new transmission.
Check Transmission Fluid
It is important to check your transmission fluid at least twice a year. On most vehicles you can use a dipstick to check the transmission fluid, just like checking your oil. Make sure to read the owners manual for instructions.
Make Sure to be at a Complete Stop Before Changing Gears
When going forward to reverse or reverse to going forward, make sure you make a complete stop. The gears are going different directions when going forward and when in reverse. You are likely to damage something if you don’t make a complete stop. Competently stopping before changing gears will not only save your transmission but your drive train as well.
Avoid Stepping on the Brakes and Gas at the Same Time
Your transmission might overheat and or even fail if you ride the brake while also stepping on the gas.
Be Cautious When Towing
A lot of problems with transmissions comes from it overheating. Towing heavy loads will cause the transmission temperature to rise, sometimes higher than normal. When towing, make sure ton use the “tow mode” if its equipped in your vehicle. If your transmission did overheat, you will notice the transmission fluid is dark and dirty.
